  1. Disconnect the Heater: Before starting any work on a water heater, be sure to turn the gas supply off and shut off the cold supply. The water inside the tank will maintain its heat for some time, so use caution when working in it.
  2. Inspect for Leaks: Walk around the unit and observe for any weeping around valves. You should also check the pressure and temperature valves.
  3. Check for Airflow: Check the flame arrestor screen found at the bottom of the tank. It’s common for debris to build up on the screen or the flue vent.
  4. Test the Relief Valve: The relief valve prevents the tank from a dangerous explosion. Perform a check to make sure the valve can open freely when needed.
  5. Work With the Anode Rod: The anode rod is found in the center of the tank and helps keep sediment and mineral buildup from corroding the unit. Checking this requires draining several gallons, supporting the tank, and using tools to pull the rod out.
  6. Flush and Refill the Tank: Deep flushing the tank is another good way to prevent buildup and encourage a long lifespan for the unit.

It’s quite an involved process! We recommend hiring experts to get the job done if you’re not qualified yourself. That’ll ensure no damage occurs to you or your home.
